13th-15th May 2016: Food, Wine, & Music
If you like wine, and you’re thinking of traveling to Tuscany to drink some of the best wines in the world, you might want to consider coming a little after Easter…7 weeks later, to be precise.
During Pentecost every year, the vaulted pathway (Via delle Volte) that runs under the old castle walls in Castellina in Chianti becomes the home of the 3-day Pentecost Chianti Classico Wine Fair. It’s one of the biggest in the region. There are usually over 50 exhibitors, each with several wines to try, so you’d be hard pressed to try them all!
Each stand usually has all their wines available, from their Chianti Classico, to their Riserva’s, the IGT ‘Super-Tuscans’, and the new ‘Gran Selezione’ wines. That’s is a LOT of wine. You buy a glass (which usually costs around €10) and you get to walk down this ancient pathway tasting the best wines made in the area. As you might imagine, this a can be a whole lot of fun.
The festival runs from 3:30 pm – 9:30 pm on Saturday, May 14 and from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm on Sunday, May 15.
Saturday has plenty of other events as well. There’s an all day craft fair in the town center and the historic Philharmonic of Castellina will play in the streets in the afternoon. The Etruscan museum (Museo Archeologico del Chianti Senese) will be open for free from 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm.
The Medieval Banquet
A traditional dinner will be held in the medieval Via delle Volte. “A CENA CON IL CLASSICO” will feature the best Chianti Classico wines from Castellina in Chianti and dishes beautifully prepared by restaurant “Albergaccio di Castellina.” The banquet is Friday, May 13 and starts at 8:00 pm.
First, it’s the 20th Anniversary of the festival, so there will be extra goings-on around town.
And, one of the world’s best known bicycle races, the Giro D’Italia, is passing through town on Saturday, so it’s going to be a busy weekend!
Hope to see you there!
